Private Tutorials

VCP offers a variety of private tutorials, including intro to digital and analog, alternative processes, and more. Please, email us if you have a specific topic in mind or you can’t find what you’re looking for. We’d be happy to find the right instructor for you!

Session times are arranged between the instructor and student, to be held at VCP or another determined location.

Sessions are $40-$60 per hour; additional materials fees may apply.

PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY

Instructor: Chris Triebert

Description: For those looking to try their hand at elementary image-making, pinhole photography opens up a new world of discovery. Learn how to make a simple pinhole camera, expose paper negatives using a light meter, develop negatives in the darkroom, and scan your images to make enlarged positive prints. (Offered May – October)

INTRO TO ANALOG 

Instructor: Willoughby Carlo

Description: This is a tutorial open to people of all levels, no prior experience is required. Students will learn the basics of loading a 35mm camera, photographing, developing film, and making silver gelatin prints in the darkroom.

INTRO TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Instructors: Beth Pelton

Description: Instruction includes: getting comfortable with your digital camera, basic functions of ISO and f-stop, going beyond the automatic settings, and composition. Discussion of what makes a good composition and a strong image.

MINDFULNESS PHOTOGRAPHY

Instructor: Amy Thompson Avishai

Description: Whether you’re a novice seeking to explore photography or an experienced artist looking to infuse mindfulness into your practice, this tutorial promises to enrich your perspective and foster a lasting appreciation for both art and mindfulness. Participants will learn to embrace the art of photography not merely as a technical skill but as a profound means of capturing emotions, stories, and the beauty of life itself.

EDITING & SEQUENCING

Instructor: Davída Carta

Description: Creating a cohesive body of work is not simply a compilation of images and can be quite a challenging process to do on our own.
During our session/s, we will review the photographs together and start editing and sequencing them to compile an organic body of work that is compelling and meaningful.

Length of session: 1 to 2 hrs (or based on needs)

FILM SCANNING

Instructor: Josh Farr

Description: We will cover the basics of creating high-resolution digital files from photographic film – including 35mm film & slides, medium format film, and large format negatives (up to 8×10) – using an Epson flatbed film scanner which can then be used to produce high-quality digital prints. We will also cover best practices for editing and touching up those files on your computer.

Length of session: 1-2 hrs

DIGITAL PRINTING

Instructor: Josh Farr

Description: Students will learn the techniques and steps involved in producing professional archival prints from large format Epson printers (up to 16×20’’ prints). Students should come to the session with a small selection of images they wish to work on. Topics will include prepping your file, paper selection, printer profiles, printer & computer settings, advanced B&W options, test prints, and reviewing your finished prints to make necessary adjustments

B/W FILM DEVELOPING

Instructor: Josh Farr

Description: Students will learn the necessary steps to get from a roll of exposed black and white (35mm or 120) film in their camera to a developed & sleeved roll of film ready to print. This includes loading your film onto developing reels, measuring chemistry, development steps, washing, drying, & sleeving.

Length of session: 1-2 hrs

B/W DARKROOM PRINTING

Instructor: Josh Farr

Description: Students will learn the necessary steps to get from a developed roll of film to finished handmade darkroom RC or Fiber prints using a traditional enlarger and chemicals. Process includes analyzing your negatives, (optionally) creating a contact sheet of your negatives, mixing printing chemistry, getting to know your enlarger and timer, exposing and processing photographic paper, washing, drying, pressing & flattening prints in a heat press.
