WORKSHOP: Chlorophyll Printing w/ Megan Bent

Vermont Center for Photography, 49 Flat Street, Brattleboro, VT, 05301 (Down the alley next to the transportation center on Flat Street).

Instructor:
Megan Bent is a New England based artist and teaching artist. She received her MFA and Graduate Certificate in Disability Studies from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa in 2012. She received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts, in New York, in 2004. She has taught black and white photography at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, and digital photography at Youth in Focus in Seattle, WA. In her personal work she specializes in alternative process photography, specifically chlorophyll printing. Her artwork has been exhibited widely across the United States in exhibitions at the Rayko Photo Center in San Francisco, The Vera Project, Seattle, WA, The East Hawaiian Cultural Center/HMOCA in Hilo, Hawai’i, Flux Factory in Long Island City, NY, El Museo Cultural, Santa Fe, NM, and the Piedmont Council for the Arts, in Charlottesville, VA.

Course Description:
In this workshop participants will learn how to chlorophyl print, a printing technique where images are printed directly onto leaves using the sun. This is a wonderful technique to create unique images and is an analog photographic process that is environmentally friendly.

9:00  Introduction to chlorophyll printing process
9:30  Create digital positives for chlorophyll printing
10:30  Combine digital positives with leaves and put out to expose in the sun.
11:00  Lecture, history on chlorophyll printing
12:00  Lunch break 1 hour
1:00  Tips for successful chlorophyll printing – what I have learned so far
2:00  Time to make more digital positives for future chlorophyll printing
2:45  Collect chlorophyll prints and scan them in (if time permits print out digital images)
3:45  Share what was made!
4:00  End of class

Participants:
Minimum of 7 – Maximum of 12 participants

Materials & Equipment Students Should Bring:
Up to 4 photographs they would like to chlorophyll print (can be either digital files or analog photographs) and a lunch/snacks for the day.

Materials provided at the workshop:
Pictorico transparency film sheets (40 sheets), contact printing frames, paper for digital print outs of chlorophyll prints (20 sheets 8.5 x 11”).
