Seeing the River: The Connecticut River in Brattleboro

Exhibition:  June 2 – July 2, 2017
Reception:  Friday, June 2  (5:30 to 8:30pm)

Seeing the River is a specially curated photo exhibition designed to celebrate the Connecticut River, the backbone of the town of Brattleboro and a source of inspiration and meaning for the community. The exhibition is a component of the NEA-funded public art project From the River, To the River, created for the town of Brattleboro by artists Elizabeth Billings, Evie Lovett, and Andrea Wasserman.

This exhibition at VCP will feature photographs taken alongside the river and on the Island by long-time Brattleboro resident and photographer Robert F. George as well as historical images from the Brattleboro Historical Society. Artists Elizabeth Billings, Evie Lovett and Andrea Wasserman will also be represented in the exhibition.

From the River, To the River is a series of five art installations considering the unique relationship between Brattleboro and the Connecticut River.  On the side of the Brattleboro Transportation Center in the driveway leading to Vermont Center for Photography is River Wall, a kinetic sculpture of 38,000 sequins imagining water patterns.  Projected Water, a video of images of over 300 people in the Brattleboro community and water imagery, is projected nightly on the hour from dusk through 11 pm from the Parking Enforcement office across the driveway onto the brick wall of the Sanel Building. Reflective Panels, mirrored panels with river-themed poetry are displayed at the Transportation Center site and at the Riverfront. At the Riverfront at 23 Depot Street are twelve granite benches and River Portrait—a 8’x25’ photographic collage. The many facets of From the River, To the River have the combined intent of fostering a closer visual, physical and emotional connection between the Town of Brattleboro and the Connecticut River.
