Focus Forward; Where Creative Expression Aids Recovery
The Vermont Center for Photography enjoys using the world of photographic arts to help the local community. Over the past year, VCP has partnered with Turning Point of Windham County Recovery Center to create the program Focus Forward to do just that, aid the community through photographic education.
Turning Point is a recovery center that provides services, free of charge, to help improve the health and welfare of people from vulnerable populations whose lives have been affected by addictions and who are pursuing recovery.
Last fall VCP and Turning Point created the program Focus Forward which provides an 8-week introductory digital photography course for people in recovery. The program is offered free of charge and with no experience necessary. Each student is given a Nikon digital camera for the duration of the course and is educated on the basics of using a camera, picture taking, and learning to edit images.
At the close of the 8 weeks VCP holds an exhibit of selected images from each student for friends, family, and the public to see. VCP believes by educating people of recovery in photographic arts it will provide a new means of creative expression to aid as a powerful tool in recovery.
