ARTIST TALK: David Ricci – Hunter Gatherer

Saturday, May 30th, 2026 at 5:00pm
Free & open to the public

Join us at VCP on Saturday, May 30th at 5:00 PM for an artist talk with photographer David Ricci, who will discuss his latest photobook Hunter Gatherer: Salvaged Stories of American Culture (MW Editions, 2026), a decade-long project that reveals America’s complex cultural history through objects and scenes discovered at resale marketplaces nationwide.

David will trace his 50-year journey as a self-taught photographer, sharing highlights from his earlier work featured in his monograph EDGE (Fall Line Press, 2022) before focusing on Hunter Gatherer. He’ll discuss stories behind key photographs, his creative process from capture to final book design, and reflect on how his perspective as a white male raised in a middle-class New England neighborhood shaped the project.

One quarter of the images in the book were captured at the Brimfield Antiques Fair in central Massachusetts, with nearly half taken throughout New England and New York—creating a strong regional connection for the Brattleboro community. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

About the artist:

David Ricci is an American photographer whose work explores human relationships with the environment and physical objects. His images function as both historical documents and social mirrors, compelling viewers to examine realities about American society and material culture.

He has had numerous solo exhibitions, was the recipient of the Annual Curator’s Award from The Center for Photographic Arts, and was longlisted for the Aesthetica Prize in the UK. Ricci has received grants from LensWork Magazine, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Artists Resource Trust, and the Martha Porter Fund.

His work is in several private and public collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Fogg Museum, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Hyde Collection, the Danforth Museum, the Smith College Museum of Art, and others.

Ricci’s work has been featured in several publications, including Lenscratch, Photomonitor, F-Stop, and Luminous Landscape. His monograph, EDGE (2022 Fall Line Press), was awarded the ForeWord Reviews Indies Awards gold prize in photography, and second prize at the PubWest Annual Book Design Awards.
