Join us for a private, guided walkthrough of Dona Ann McAdams’ exhibition Troubleshooting at the Southern Vermont Arts Center, led by Dona herself. Limited to just 12 guests, this small-group tour offers a rare chance to hear directly from the artist about her photographic process, the decisions behind selecting and sequencing the work, and what it took to bring this exhibition together.
Dona has spent over fifty years behind the camera, documenting communities from the backstretch of Saratoga Race Course to small mountain towns in Appalachia. This is a chance to walk through her work with her as your guide, ask questions, and get a firsthand look at how a lifetime of photographs becomes an exhibition.
Space is limited to 12 members, so early registration is encouraged.

About Dona Ann McAdams:

Dona Ann McAdams has been making photographs for over fifty years, with work shown at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the International Center for Photography, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among other venues. Her books include Black Box: A Photographic Memoir (Saint Lucy Books, 2024) and Caught in the Act (Aperture, 1996). Her honors include a Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize from Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies, an Obie Award and a Bessie Award for her performance photography, grants from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Vermont Arts Council, and, in 2025, the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, the highest honor Vermont presents to an artist.
Since 1983, McAdams has brought cameras and photography into small, underserved communities, setting up darkrooms and teaching people to shoot, process, and develop their own film. She has worked in adult homes for people living with mental illness, homeless shelters, Appalachian mountain communities, New England dairy farms, and, for more than 20 years, the backstretch of the Saratoga Race Course. Her photographs have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The London Times, Art Forum, Doubletake, and Aperture, and she has taught and lectured at Rutgers University, New York University, the International Center for Photography, the American Center in Barcelona, and Hostos Community College in New York City.
