This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the process of hand coloring black-and-white photographic prints using Prismacolor colored pencils. The day will begin with a discussion on preparing and printing photographs specifically for hand coloring, followed by a demonstration of the instructor’s approach to tinting prints.

Participants will experiment using 5×7-inch prints before moving on to a final piece. Each student can expect to complete one to two finished hand-colored photographs on 8×10-inch paper by the end of the workshop.

No prior experience is required, and all levels are welcome.

Materials Needed

  • Prismacolor Premier colored pencils
    • A set of 24 pencils is sufficient
    • Please note: These exact pencils are required. Other brands or types of colored pencils are not suitable for this process.

Image Submission (Required)

  • Participants should email three black-and-white JPEG photographs to the instructor in advance of the workshop. The instructor will provide:
    • Three 5×7-inch prints of each image for experimentation and drafts
    • One 8×10-inch print of each image for a final version

Additional Details

  • Participants: Limited to 6
  • Experience Level: No prior experience necessary

Instructor: Frank Gorga

Since retiring from a career as a chemistry professor, Frank Gorga has devoted his creative energies to photography. His main photographic interests are wildlife, especially odonta (dragonflies and damselflies), and the landscape. However, he makes photographs of many other subjects as he wends his way through life. In addition to hand-coloring prints, Frank produces salted-paper prints, platinum/palladium prints, cuprotypes, anthotypes, and cyanotypes (both untoned and toned). His website is www.frg-photo.com.
