Discover one of the earliest and most magical photographic printing processes! Invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel and famously used by Anna Atkins—the first person to publish a book illustrated with photographs—cyanotypes are known for their rich, deep blue tones and their blend of science and art.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of the cyanotype process and create their own unique prints. Using light-sensitive chemistry, natural sunlight or VCP’s UV box, and simple objects or transparencies, you’ll have the opportunity to produce and take home several completed cyanotype works.
All materials—paper, chemicals, and a variety of objects for overlay—will be supplied and are included in the enrollment fee. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own objects or materials (such as plants, lace, or small found items) to experiment with for more personalized results.
The workshop will be led by local artist Ezra Distler, who will guide you through the process step by step, from coating paper to exposing and developing your prints.
No prior experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity and creativity!
