Details

This two day workshop will introduce you to the Mordançage process. Initially created to apply as a film reversal process and was later named the ‘Etch/bleach’ process. Known for ‘the veils’ – an expressive use of the emulsion to create unique prints ranging from diaphanous to apocalyptic. This process has much more to offer in terms of depth, techniques, and creative choices. You will learn to print for the process and manage workflow and materials to successful application and troubleshooting and learning to ‘go with the flow’ managing unexpected results. Artists will learn to apply expressive new approaches to their silver gelatin prints.

Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to learn the following techniques; etch/bleach, the veils, Dépouillement, redevelopment, toning, oxidation and archival concerns and treatments.  We will cover technical basics – from darkroom review, for those who need it, image selection for printing using an updated version of the chemical process. Students are encouraged to bring their own film negatives to print from.
