WORKSHOP: Introduction to Large Format Photography
Saturday, April 12th, 2025, 12 to 5pm
Large format photography is an intimidating subject. It has a reputation for being complex and expensive. Even if you have a mentor to hold your hand while you learn “the dance,” there is usually a significant up-front cost to purchase a camera, lens, and supporting infrastructure. This workshop is an opportunity to try large format photography in a wide variety of situations without having to purchase any new gear. You will have the opportunity to shoot architecture, landscape, macro, still-life, and portrait work both in a studio space using professional lighting set-ups and outdoors working with natural light. Together, we’ll go over the process of loading, exposing, developing, and printing with large format film. We’ll also talk about some resources for learning more about large format photography, tips for buying gear, and ways to shoot economically. You will take home at least four 4×5 negatives, a contact sheet, an 8×10 paper negative, and the accompanying contact print. VCP will provide film, paper, and darkroom chemistry.
Thinks you should bring:
• A bagged lunch (or be prepared to buy lunch)
• Your own light meter (if you have one)
• A dark/opaque jacket, spare shirt, or pillow case to use as a dark cloth
