This online course provides an introduction to alternative photographic processes and will enable you to quickly come to grips with the basics of hand-coated emulsions and chemistry techniques, with an emphasis on developing your skills of perception and craft. During the course you will have the opportunity to work from the comfort of your own space to create a series of prints in different historic processes. Images may be sourced from personal or found images, as well as objects or cliche verres. Students will be supported in finding safe, easy and affordable ways to print at home. While the course objective looks to the past, there’s also much to be learned from the present state of photography and, we will discuss a wide selection of photographs – from
photography’s inception over 160 years ago through to its current state.
By the end of the course you will have:
● Learned more about alternative processes and artists working with alternative photography
techniques.
● Found convenient affordable ways to print at home and source equipment and materials.
● Learned to mix chemicals and their appropriate handling.
● Experimented with 4 different alternative photographic printing techniques, made a range of
prints and experimented with toning.
● Had the opportunity to work in a group with class critiques.

*Some of the processes are not vegan, but if the instructor is notified in advance accommodations/substitutions can be made.
Prior experience required: Experienced practitioners and those new to photography will find this course enriching.
Materials: a link and materials list will be provoded a week before the start of class.
Instructor: Brittonie Fletcher is an American-British artist (in alphabetical order), holding an MFA in Contemporary Fine Art from the University of Edinburgh and a Higher Education Teaching Certification from Harvard University. Her work (exhibiting, teaching, etc) is primarily between the UK and the USA, but she is always open to learning about potential exhibitions, teaching, or curatorial opportunities. She loves to travel for work and am quite happy teaching online too. More abou ther work here.
