Juror’s Remarks:
“I was honored to review hundreds of images from all over the US as well as the UK and several European countries. The inventive range of images, techniques, and materials attest to a vigorous renaissance in hand-made, reconfigured, 21st century photography. Ironically I could not see the submitted works in person, but could only review gum prints, daguerreotypes, artists books, cyanotypes on fabric, platinum/palladium prints, etc. through digital means.
Another juror could have reviewed the same 397 images and chosen an entirely different exhibition – perhaps with little or no overlap with my choices. I picked images that made me keep thinking – even if they were uncomfortable, raw, or disquieting. I gravitated toward odd, even awkward, photographs that filled me with wonder and left me thinking about the content of the image, rather than how it was made. I chose images that made me look, and then look again. I was also drawn to images that disrupted my usual notions of portraiture, landscape, or still life. Other images spoke to me of atmosphere (rather than events), and seemed to provide a glimpse into another reality, or into an interrupted narrative.”
